School life presents a variety of obstacles and difficulties throughout the day. Many of us have the habit of overthinking these obstacles and making them bigger in our head. Self-talk is a concept that can absolutely make or break your performance in school and in life. Today, let’s reflect on our self-talk and decide whether we are making positive or negative statements.

Self-talk is something that we all do. It doesn’t necessarily have to be out loud, though many people do talk out loud to themselves. Self-talk is all of the thoughts you have about your ability to do or not do something. As we face different situations daily, we decide in our head what our outcome will be before we perform and see what the actual outcome is. Here are some examples of self-talk.

Positive:

  • I can do this
  • I’m excited to try
  • I bet I can give a better effort
  • Time to refocus and try again
  • I’m going to learn from this
  • I love the challenge

Negative:

  • I can’t do this
  • I don’t want to try
  • My effort doesn’t matter because I will fail
  • I have to do this again?
  • I’m going to be devastated from this
  • I hate the challenge

Your self-talk creates your reality and it really is as simple as changing your language to change your life. if you aren’t satisfied with your current performance in school, start looking at the way you talk to yourself.
