Let’s talk mindset myths! While mindset training is common for high level athletes, we don’t talk about it or use it as much in school. Mindset training is the most effective resource to maximize your potential and help you perform at your best in school, sports, relationships, business, and life in general! Let’s bust these myths…

Mindset Myth #1: Mindset training is just pep talks and motivational speeches.

Reality: Motivational speeches can actually hurt your mindset. It causes a huge rise and fall in motivation, confidence, and resilience. Instead of the wild ups and downs of pep talks, mindset training gives you a steady rise. It helps you get motivated, but also helps you to sustain that motivation over long periods of time without crashing. It takes consistent practice and application in your own life, which helps you learn on a much deeper level than listening to a motivational speaker passively.

Mindset Myth #2: You either have a positive or negative mindset. It’s just a part of your personality.

Reality: Your mindset is under your control and can be trained, practiced, and improved like any other skill. Also, like any other skill, it can be greatly improved but never perfected. We can always strengthen our mindset further, but if we neglect it, it will diminish.

Mindset Myth #3: Mindset training is way too expensive.

Reality: Most people spend more money on a specific test prep program (ACT, SAT, LSAT, MCAT, etc.) than they would need to spend on mindset training which will help them score higher on every test and provide benefits to every aspect of their life! Our 1-1 coaching and fully online do-it-yourself curriculum are priced comparably to average tutoring and test prep services but we provide life-long benefits. The value of mindset training over other academic programs are based on your value of short term gain vs. long term success (although mindset training can provide excellent short-term gains as well)!

Mindset Myth #4: Mindset training is for sports, not for school.

Reality: In sports – practices are long, challenging, and boring. They test your patience and determination daily. This leads up to a big competition where coaches and parents have placed high expectations on you. You have to balance those pressures with your own anxiety as you face your competition and try to live up to your potential. Is school any different? Classes are long, challenging, and boring. They test your patience and determination daily. This leads up to a big test where teachers and parents have placed high expectations on you. You have to balance those pressures with your own anxiety as you face your exams and try to live up to your potential…

Mindset Myth #5: Mindset training is no different from therapy or counseling.

Reality: Therapy and counseling are given by certified professionals to evaluate your mental health and provide approaches for problems that may occur in life. Mindset training is not therapy. In fact, it’s the opposite. It’s a proactive approach to strengthening your mindset and engaging in practice to help you improve consistently. Like any skill training, you need practice and repetitions to help you perform at your best, and mindset training offers that skill practice for your mental strength.

Mindset Myth #6: I don’t need a mindset coach to help me strengthen my mind.

Reality: You could be the most mentally tough person you know. However, there is always another level to reach. You can make great progress on your own but a coach can lower your learning curve, narrow in on strengths and weaknesses, and optimize your training. If your goal is to maximize your potential and increase your level of success, you need a mindset coach. It is not a weakness to get coaching. We do that all the time for other skills, like learning a music instrument or a new sport. A mindset coach has the tools you need to jump levels.

Mindset Myth #7: I can have a strong mindset when I need it, even if I’m not usually that way.

Reality: We are what we practice. It’s easy to let ourselves off the hook by believing we can just coast through our average days and come up big when we need it. However, when you really need it, you will be under pressure and will perform to the level of your training. The more we take our mindset for granted, the more difficult it will be to act in line with our values when we need to most.
